<h3>Plinest Skin Booster<br />IDS Clinic</h3>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>I agreed to get a skin-rejuvenation shot for the first time in my life for this story, but I wasn&rsquo;t fazed. The clinic was <a href="https://www.idsclinic.com/">IDS</a> and its founder, Dr SK Tan, has a stellar reputation with some hailing him the &ldquo;grandfather of Singapore aesthetics&rdquo;.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Now here&rsquo;s an aesthetics clinic that understands a first-timer&rsquo;s jitters. Dr Lina Yow told me what to expect during and after the procedure and assured me that she would go slow and be gentle with the injections. Should I become anxious at any point, distraction techniques such as the use of cold air would be applied.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>She prescribed Plinest, a new potent skin booster in Singapore, designed to stimulate natural cell regeneration and revitalise the skin internally by fostering its healing abilities. This should result in a glowing complexion, a more youthful texture, and enhanced firmness and elasticity. It also promises to minimise the appearance of pores and lighten pigmentation.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>To revitalise my tired-looking eyes, Dr Yow used Plinest Fast, which has a thinner formulation allowing for a smoother flow into the delicate eye area. Suitable for those with eczema and sensitive skin, Plinest stands out from other non-surgical skin rejuvenators for its efficacy in treating the undereye area, acne scars and visible pores, which is one of the most difficult problems to solve.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>The procedure began 30 minutes after numbing cream was applied on my face. While Dr Yow worked and explained each step, an assistant tapped my shoulder to distract me from the injections. But she didn&rsquo;t have to do that for long. Apart from a slight tingle, I was relaxed and could chat with Dr Yow. The entire session lasted about 15 minutes.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Other than facial tenderness and sensitivity with a little swelling, as well as puffy eyes that subsided within two days, there was little downtime as Dr Yow used a cannula to deliver the injections. Unlike a sharp needle, the cannula&rsquo;s blunt tip minimises the risk of accidentally puncturing a blood vessel that would cause bruising. I could resume the rest of my day &ndash; at home &ndash; without much discomfort. I was to avoid vigorous exercise, alcohol and make-up re-application, what with the micro wounds at the injection spots.</p>

<p>While it could take up to four weeks to see results, my visible pores seemed less prominent just a fortnight later. The results could last up to nine months, depending on skin type and age. &ndash; Jacquie Ang</p>

<p>We know that travelling can wreak havoc on our skin. After all, we&rsquo;ve been told countless times how drying airplane air is. So how bad is it exactly?</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>According to Dr Vivian Yong, an aesthetic doctor at IDS Clinic, the humidity of the recirculated cabin is less than 20 per cent compared to the humidity on land, which is at 40 to 60 per cent. &ldquo;Anything below 30 per cent is considered too dry for comfort. In addition, relative humidity decreases with altitude, and at the typical cruising altitude of 35,000 ft and 41,000 ft, the relative humidity is less than 1 per cent.&rdquo;</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Thus, the fresh air that is drawn into the cabin is extremely dry when flying at those altitudes. &ldquo;This fresh air is then mixed with the recirculated air, and the passengers and crew are the only sources of moisture,&rdquo; shared Dr Yong.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>This dry air not only dries out the skin, but our nasal passages, sinuses, eyes and lips too. But that&rsquo;s not all, she added that this drying out of the mucous membranes can also lead to an increase in us being susceptible to viruses.</p>

<p><strong>2. AVOID USING HARSH PRODUCTS </strong></p>

<p>Taking a flight can be stressful to the skin, and the last thing you&rsquo;d want is to deal with dry and reactive skin when you&rsquo;re mid-flight. Which is why Dr Yong cautioned against using products that can cause irritation or peeling, such as strong exfoliating products or those that contain Vitamin A, retinol or retinoids. &ldquo;Leave those to when your skin will not be subjected to further stressors, such as the dry cabin air.&rdquo;</p>

<p><strong>1. APPLY, AND RE-APPLY, YOUR SUNSCREEN </strong></p>

<p>According to Dr Yong, at higher altitudes, the exposure to UV radiation is higher compared to on ground. &ldquo;The combination of a reduced cloud cover, reflection off the clouds, and being significantly closer to the ozone layer, which has trapped a lot of the sun&rsquo;s UV radiation, all contribute to an increased UV exposure when flying.&rdquo;</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>And of course, don&rsquo;t forget to lower your window shade too. Said Dr Yong, &ldquo;While the materials of the airplane windows can block out UVB rays, they stop only about 50 per cent of the UVA rays from penetrating.&rdquo;</p>

<p><strong>2. STAY HYDRATED &ndash; INSIDE AND OUT </strong></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Besides drinking lots of water, keep skin well-hydrated with moisturiser or a face mist. Ong shared that she&rsquo;s seen her ex-colleagues remove their makeup during long flights and re-do their skincare to hydrate their skin, before carefully re-applying their makeup again.</p>

<p><strong>3. KEEP SKIN MAKEUP-FREE</strong></p>

<p>Just as you don&rsquo;t wear makeup to sleep, you really shouldn&rsquo;t be wearing makeup on flights, especially if you&rsquo;re on a red-eye flight.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>&ldquo;The low humidity onboard dehydrates the skin, which may lead to an overproduction of sebum. With heavy foundation trapping dirt and sebum for an extended period of time, it becomes the perfect breeding ground for acne to form,&rdquo; explained Dr Tan.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>In fact, all our beauty enthusiasts and skin doctors aren&rsquo;t fans of wearing makeup during a flight. With Ho and Ong both sharing that they remove their makeup on board, apply skincare, and then if need be, re-apply makeup just before landing. Said Ong, &ldquo;I always feel that my skin can breathe better without makeup onboard.&rdquo;</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>But if you insist on wearing makeup so you don&rsquo;t look like death during your flight, Dr Yong advised going for a minimalist approach. &ldquo;Avoid heavily pigmented, waterproof or long-lasting makeup as these often contain ingredients that can cause the skin to be even drier. Instead, swap your usual full-on makeup with alternatives like tinted moisturiser and tinted sunscreen, as well as a lip balm in your favourite shade.&rdquo;</p>
<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>
<p><strong>4. APPLY LIP BALM FREQUENTLY AND LIBERALLY </strong></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Besides a face mist, Ong shared that she always keeps a lip balm handy in her bag on flights. &ldquo;It&rsquo;s very essential for all passengers!&rdquo;</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Yes indeed, said Dr Yong. In fact, she recommends not only frequent, but also liberal application of lip balm during your flight. &ldquo;The skin on the lips is thinner and more delicate than the skin on the rest of the body, and is often the first area to show signs of drying out. Chapped, cracked lips are not only un-aesthetic, but can also be painful.&rdquo;</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>And if your lip balm comes with SPF, that&rsquo;s even better.</p>

<p>And while Dr Yong shared that she does pack samples that she doesn&rsquo;t manage to use at home when travelling, there is a caveat to what she brings along. &ldquo;I try to use samples of products that I am already using or have tried out without any issues. Being onboard with possibly no means to treat irritated skin, as well as being subjected to the stresses on the body whilst crossing time zones, it is not an ideal situation to be trying out new products.&rdquo;</p>

Travel skincare tips before, during and after a flight to look fresh when you reach your destination

<p>There are many controversies and misconceptions on beauty ingredients. How much do we know about beauty ingredients and what should we look out for? <a href="https://www.idsclinic.com/team/dr-ian-tan">Dr Ian Tan</a> shares his insights on 3 commonly misunderstood beauty ingredients &mdash; Retinoids, Hydroxy acids and Parabens.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<ul>
<li class="p1"><strong><span class="s1">Retinoids </span></strong></li>
</ul>
<p class="p1"><span class="s1">Retinoids refer to the broad class of products that contain retinol, which is a vitamin A derivative, an ingredient that is commonly found in many anti-aging serums and creams. These are traditionally used by doctors for patients to improve skin texture, acne control, anti-aging, and even out the skin tone. </span></p>
<p class="p1">&nbsp;</p>
<p class="bard-text-block style-scope"><strong class="bard-text-block style-scope">Common Misconception: </strong>Retinoids can thin the skin.</p>
<p class="bard-text-block style-scope"><span class="s1">Some people have experienced slight discomfort like stinging or flaking skin when using retinol products, but that doesn&rsquo;t mean that their skin is thinning out or sensitive. </span></p>
<p class="bard-text-block style-scope">&nbsp;</p>
<p class="bard-text-block style-scope"><strong class="bard-text-block style-scope">Fact: </strong>This is a misunderstanding because the initial action of retinoids is to increase the turnover of the very top layer of the upper epidermis, which lines up those cells in a more organized way. With time, retinoid use starts to strengthen the skin, making it healthier and stronger, not weaker and thinner.</p>
<p class="bard-text-block style-scope">&nbsp;</p>
<p class="bard-text-block style-scope"><strong class="bard-text-block style-scope">Dr Ian's advice:</strong> If you&rsquo;re trying out retinol for the first time, start at a low concentration of retinol and start by only using it once or twice weekly, gradually increasing the frequency to every other night before finally using it daily. Remember that retinol is one of those ingredients that your skin can build up its tolerance for.</p>
<p class="bard-text-block style-scope">&nbsp;</p>

<li class="p1"><span class="s1"><strong>Hydroxy Acids</strong></span></li>
</ul>
<p class="p1"><span class="s1">There are quite a number of acids that most can find in the ingredient list at the back of skincare products and hydroxy acid is probably one of them. The two big groups of hydroxy acids are namely alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) and beta hydroxy acids (BHAs). These acids are present in many of our cosmetic products, such as serums, creams or cleansers, and act as chemical exfoliants.</span></p>
<p class="p1">&nbsp;</p>
<p class="bard-text-block style-scope"><strong class="bard-text-block style-scope">Common Misconception: </strong>Hydroxy acids are harsh on the skin, resulting in thinning and increased sensitivity to the sun.</p>
<p class="bard-text-block style-scope">&nbsp;</p>
<p class="bard-text-block style-scope"><strong class="bard-text-block style-scope">Fact:</strong> The potential downsides of using AHAs such as glycolic acid indeed includes possible sun sensitivity, peeling and itching. Overall, this means that you'll need to be extra diligent about slathering on sunscreen and avoid applying them in the daytime.</p>
<p class="bard-text-block style-scope">&nbsp;</p>
<p class="bard-text-block style-scope"><strong class="bard-text-block style-scope">Dr Ian's advice: </strong>However, when used correctly, both AHAs and BHAs can penetrate the skin surface and detach more dead skin cells from the stratum corneum than physical exfoliants such as scrubbing beads. They can even improve the appearance of skin that&rsquo;s dull or hyper-pigmented due to sun damage or other skin build-ups, resurface dry skin, and even reduce the appearance of wrinkles and smooth the skin. AHAs and BHAs can also stimulate cell renewal, leading to plumper skin with better texture.</p>
<p class="p1">&nbsp;</p>
<ul>
<li class="p1"><span class="s1"><strong>Parabens</strong></span></li>
</ul>
<p class="p1"><span class="s1">Parabens are a group of chemicals that are widely used in topical pharma/cosmeceutical products as preservatives, they prevent mold from growing in the skincare products.</span></p>
<p class="p1">&nbsp;</p>
<p class="bard-text-block style-scope"><strong class="bard-text-block style-scope">Common Misconception:</strong> Parabens are toxic chemicals and may lead to breast cancer.</p>
<p class="bard-text-block style-scope">&nbsp;</p>
<p class="bard-text-block style-scope"><strong class="bard-text-block style-scope">Fact:</strong> The bad rep surrounding parabens originated from a 2004 study that mistakenly linked parabens to breast cancer. However, despite what many cosmetic brands lead you to believe, parabens are not toxic and you don&rsquo;t have to avoid parabens.</p>
<p class="bard-text-block style-scope">&nbsp;</p>
<p class="bard-text-block style-scope"><strong class="bard-text-block style-scope">Dr Ian's advice: </strong><span class="bard-text-block style-scope">Alt</span><span class="bard-text-block style-scope">hough parabens does not do much to the skin, it's potentially more harmful to not have them in our skincare products. It's one of the oldest most effective and most studied preservatives out there. There has been no evidence that the types of parabens in the low level used in formulating skincare products have resulted in endocrine disruption or cancer in humans as some articles have claimed.</span></p>
<p class="bard-text-block style-scope">&nbsp;</p>
<p class="bard-text-block style-scope"><span class="bard-text-block style-scope"><span class="s1">In fact, to cope with the increasing consumer demand for paraben-free products, the</span> <span class="s1">industry is using a worse alternative; preservatives containing Methylisothiazoline (MI) for example. MI is less effective, it is used in industrial paints and glues that has been linked to a higher rate of allergic contact dermatitis.</span></span></p>

<div>I chose this Non-tinted version of their sunscreen because it provides a more mattifying finish compared to the Tinted version. I like how this sunscreen feels like I've applied barely any on my skin and it is easy to blend. It does look scarily white before blending out, but once it is blended, this sunscreen doesn't leave a whitecast ( refer to my <a href="https://youtu.be/L_HzNrsOQtk" target="_blank" rel="noopener">video</a>).</div>

<div>Good skin doesn't come easy. I cannot stress this enough as wearing a mask changed my skin condition. Thus, the wrong skin care routine/makeup can cause breakouts. I am glad this doesn't. You can also wear <strong>IDS DD base </strong>on its own or underneath your foundation. The coverage is light but it is buildable to your liking (around medium coverage). I especially love how it makes my skin looks - softer with a natural glow. It is easy to apply (I use fingers) and remove. There is very minimal transfer but can smudge if it's too humid/hot under your mask.&nbsp; &nbsp;</div>
