3 beginner-friendly aesthetic treatments to enhance your beauty routine
30 July 2024

Despite hearing friends constantly talk about the different aesthetic treatments that they’ve done or having friends who make regular trips to Seoul for aesthetic treatments, you have not plucked up the courage to start. Perhaps you’re overwhelmed by the options available and unsure where to begin. Or you’ve been hesitant because your pain tolerance isn’t the best. Maybe it’s a little of both. It’s only natural, especially if you’re new to the aesthetic game.

When is a good time to start?

There is really no ideal time to start getting aesthetic treatments done as it varies for each individual.

Ageing progresses differently for everyone, and is influenced by factors like genetics and lifestyle. But you can start thinking about seeing an aesthetic doctor in your early 30s or even late 20s for maintenance and anti-ageing, said Dr Liz Lum, aesthetic doctor at IDS Clinic. “We start losing collagen, elastic tissue in our mid-20s, but most of us do not realise it as we still look youthful in our 20s,” she adds.

As with everything in life, prevention is better than cure, and the same principle applies to anti-ageing aesthetic treatments as well.

“Think of your skin as a collagen bank: replenish it earlier and your ‘bank account’ will stay healthy longer. Starting treatments before significant ageing signs become pronounced can help you sustain youthful skin and delay more noticeable ageing effects."

But if you’re worried that once you embark on this journey, you will have to keep doing treatments forever, Dr Lum says not to worry as this is a common misconception. This fear often stems from the belief that once you start [doing aesthetic treatments], you won’t be able to accept your natural appearance without them.

“Stopping a particular treatment is not going to make you look worse for wear,” says Dr Lum. “You’ll simply continue to age naturally,”.

Here are three aesthetic treatments to consider if you’re just starting.

Laser treatments

ABOVE Popular laser treatments include Pico and Q-switched laser.

Lasers target specific skin concerns by emitting concentrated light that penetrates the skin layers. They are versatile treatments that often target skin issues like hyperpigmentation, post-acne marks, redness, sun damage, uneven skin tone and texture.

Lasers are usually well-tolerated with only mild discomfort, often described as a rubber band snapping against the skin, and come with near-zero downtime.

Some popular laser treatments include Pico and Q-switched laser.

Botulinum Toxin

ABOVE Getting botox done is simple and quick, as the procedure takes less than five minutes

Botox is done by injecting botulinum toxin into specific muscles to temporarily relax them, thus reducing the appearance of dynamic wrinkles, especially around the eyes and forehead. It can also be used on the jaw area to achieve a slimmer jawline.

A simple and quick procedure takes less than five minutes and causes minimal discomfort.

Non-invasive lifting treatments

ABOVE Popular non-invasive lifting treatments

Using either ultrasound or radiofrequency energy to heat the deeper layers of the skin, stimulating collagen production and tightening the skin, these treatments address mild to moderate skin laxity, fine lines and overall skin firmness. The level of discomfort varies according to the amount of heat generated, with usually the most discomfort at the areas where the bone lies beneath the skin, and of course, your level of pain tolerance.

And one of the best benefits of these, says Dr Lum, is that they can be done just once a year, depending on your skin condition. Popular non-invasive lifting treatments include HIFU, Thermage and Sofwave. Regardless of which treatment you may opt for, focuse on what is suitable for your specific skin concern and recommends opting for non-invasive treatments as these are often more appealing to first-timers who might prefer to start “slow”.

The Dos And Don’ts

Now that you’re ready to make that appointment, here are some things to do before, during and after your first consultation with the doctor:

Do your research.

In addition, choosing a reputable clinic with experienced and certified practitioners, you can also read reviews, ask for recommendations and verify the credentials of the doctor.

Communication is key.

Make a list of your main concerns and discuss them openly with the doctor. This helps set realistic expectations and allows the doctor to develop a comprehensive treatment plan tailored to you.

Ease yourself in.

For newbies, it would be better to try a single treatment on your first appointment rather than doing multiple treatments together. “This will reduce any daunting feeling,” says Dr Lum.

Post-treatment aftercare is equally important.

As a general rule, aftercare usually includes diligent sunscreen application and adequate moisturisation. The former prevents hyperpigmentation while the latter aids in healing the skin and helps maintain skin barrier function to support the treatment’s benefits. Specific treatment aftercare protocols can also include, refraining from exercise, alcohol consumption and smoking for the next 24-48 hours for injectable treatments (“It can hinder recovery and healing,” explains Dr Lum), and avoiding the use of retinol and physical exfoliators for a week for laser and energy-based treatments.

But when in doubt, always check in with your doctor if there are specific aftercare instructions or guidelines to follow.

Ultimately, "The goal of aesthetic treatments should be to enhance your natural look, not to make you look drastically different. Its purpose is to enhance your confidence and help you feel your best, not to create a dependency on them. The best results are those that make you look like a refreshed, improved version of yourself”.
